Trilliant Shelties is located on 1 1/4 acres in Dover (near Tampa), Florida, and is a small hobby kennel.
In 1992, my husband and I acquired our first Shetland sheepdog as a companion. Shortly thereafter, I discovered obedience and have been competing in a variety of venues since that time. The dogs at Trilliant are competing in conformation and, in the past, agility and herding. Just as people who ski, sail, or play golf may make substantial investments in order to enjoy their hobby, my hobby of choice is to raise and show my dogs in AKC events.
Many have asked what our kennel name "Trilliant" means. A trilliant cut diamond has the shape like a triangle top view. It is is one of the more unusual cuts. The trilliant displays a very sharp brilliance or fire if the diamond is cut to the correct depth allowing good scintillation.

It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce the birth of our first child Jack Donovan Riley. He will be a great puppy raiser for sure!

I chose the kennel name "Trilliant" after learning that this cut of diamond has three sides and is very brilliant to the eye. With many of my dogs , I trial in three different "arenas"--conformation, performance, and herding. I felt this name reflects my three points of interest with my dogs and also the brilliance this breed possesses.
As with most hobby breeders, I belong to clubs (on both a local and national level) which have a Code of Ethics whose provisions I follow. Currently, I am a member of the following AKC clubs:
|
American Shetland Sheepdog Association (ASSA);
|
Shetland Sheepdog Club of Southeast Florida;
|
Tampa Bay Area Shetland Sheepdog Club; and the
|
Brandon Kennel Club. |
In respect to my club memberships, I have been a member of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association, the national breed club, since September 2002. I am an active member of the Tampa Bay Area Shetland Sheepdog Club, Inc. and, in the past, have served as president and vice president of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Southeast Florida, Inc.
In addition to my club affiliations, I attend regular breed-oriented "continuing education" (i.e. seminars), and the annual national show of the American Shetland Sheepdog Association. Up until our move to Dover, Florida, in April 2006, I worked for a large (19 vet), nationally recognized, respected, and accredited animal hospital for ten years.
On
the average, I have only one or two carefully planned and selected litters a
year. As a small hobby breeder, I may keep one or more puppies in a litter
that has the potential to grow into a future show prospect. As such, we
will occasionally have puppies available for placement to loving homes.
All puppies are raised in the house with much activity and the adults live indoors also. Puppies have gone to both performance and pet homes. All companion puppies are sold on a spay/neuter contract and general ownership contract. Applicants are screened carefully as I take being a hobby breeder seriously and am very careful to whom my puppies are sold.
A hobby breeder’s next generation cannot be determined immediately, and those that appear to have potential for future breeding and showing are raised for several months or longer. Therefore, sometimes young adults are also available for placement.
I strive to breed healthy, well-adjusted puppies. All breeding adults are OFA, Cerf’d, vWD (unless clear by parentage), and thyroid tested. My focus is on a correctly structured, stable, and confident sheltie, regardless if it is a show dog or a beloved pet.
